Hey guys, I create music in a project called “Rocket Ship Resort”, and I’m funding an album inspired by Owl City, Blink-182, Angels & Airwaves, adventure and aviation and video game-y sounds, especially Sega music, especially Dreamcast-era: like Skies…
as far as i’m concerned, the most powerful feminist can do WHATEVER SHE WANTS.
THAT IS WHAT DEFINES A TRUE FEMINIST.
this includes: wearing heels, wearing combat boots, wearing nothing, sporting lipstick, shaving, not shaving, waxing, not waxing, being political, being apolitical, having a job, being homeless, gazing at men, gazing at women, gazing at porn of all sorts, glamming up like a drag queen, going in man-drag, being in a five-way polyamorous relationship, being childless, being a stay-at-home parent, being single, having a wife, having a husband, and gazing/cooing adoringly at those that wives or husbands anywhere they fucking choose, including elevators, restaurants, puppet shows (well, maybe keep it g-rated if there are small children present), ….or on theatrical stages at fringe festivals. are we getting the picture here?? the most powerful feminist can do WHATEVER SHE WANTS. the minute you believe you’re a “bad feminist” because you said the wrong thing/wore the wrong thing/got married/chose to have children…or otherwise broke some unspecified ”code of feminism”: DON’T BUY IT. THERE ISN’T ONE. you can do ANYTHING YOU WANT. ANYTHING. THAT’S THE POINT.
let’s say that one more time for good measure:
don’t let anyone try to turn you into a feminist.
just be one.

Yet there is never this kind of encouragement or empowerment for guys. There’s no word for it, no awareness, no movement. If a girl does something out of place of “traditional” femininity, it’s supported and empowering; it’s “girl power”. That’s fantastic. If a guy is out of place of “traditional” masculinity, they’re strange and unattractive.
The more it’s brought up this way for women, the more the “odd ones out” are drowned out elsewhere…
Case in point: what if a girl wants to wear pants? Or have short hair? Play in a punk band? Wear combats? Hold hands with another girl? It’s cool. No worries. And men are still interested in you.
What if a guy wants to be a nurse? Hold hands with his friend, non-ironically? What about if he wants to wear a skirt? Heels? Feel small or taken care of? And yet, he’s straight?
Would you want to date that guy?
I don’t have a problem, at all, with people being super pro-gender equality. I think women should totally be empowered, everywhere, always. That’s really basic stuff; anyone that opposes that is backwards and scared, frankly. I think women should be able to do everything men can do, no matter the scenario, and that the equipment they have shouldn’t make a difference for them in society or how they are viewed by others or how they feel about themselves. But that’s never really brought up for guys… it’s not the same. There’s not even a word for that, let alone a full-scale progressive movement. :(
